to Dover. Ferry to Calais. Onward travel to your accommodation in Nijemgen (4* B&B for three nights). Check-in & evening free. (Note: This itinerary can be adapted for groups wishing to travel via P&O North Sea Ferries sailing overnight from Hull. Please ask our staff for details).
Day Two (Arnhem):
Operation Market was the airborne element of Montgomery's plan to shorten the war by making a direct thrust across the Neder Rijn into Germany. Visits to:
Ginkel Heath: British 1st Airborne Division Landing Zones (LZs) & Dropping Zones (DZs)
Reijerscamp: The German response & the destruction of the coup de main
Hartenstein Museum: Urquhart's HQ during the battle; Lion Route; the Perimeter
Westerbouwing Heights: The high ground at Oosterbeek; the Neder Rijn
"Lonsdale's" Church: Defence of the Perimeter; Sargeant Baskeyfield VC; Kate ter Horst
Oosterbeek Cemetery: Airborne casualties from Arnhem & Oosterbeek
The Hollows: The arrival of Hackett's brigade & their attempts to reach Arnhem Bridge
St Elizabeth's Hospital, Onderlangs & Bovenover: The battle of West Arnhem
The John Frost Bridge at Arnhem: Frost's isolated command & the battle at the bridge
Return to accommodation & evening free.
Day Three (Groesbeek & Nijmegen): Operation Garden was the ground element of the plan. Horrocks' XXX Corps were to advance along what became Hell's Highway. Visits to:
Groesbeek National Liberation Museum at Groesbeek: The battle for Nijemegen
Groesbeek Cemetery & Memorial: The Canadians in the Second World War
Jonkerbos War Cemetery: XXX Corps & Airborne casualties
The Waal Bridge: The American 82nd Airborne Division's amphibious assault
Free time in the afternoon to explore Nijmegen before returning to your hotel in the evening.
Day Four (Return):
Depart for Calais & ferry crossing to Dover. Return to local drop-off point.
