Dunkirk Battlefield Tour: Suggested Three-Day Itinerary

Day One (Outward):  Local pick-up & travel to Dover. Ferry to Calais. Onward travel to your accommodation in Ypres (3* B&B for two nights). Check-in & evening free.
(Note:  This itinerary can be adapted for groups wishing to travel via overnight sailing from Hull. Please ask our staff for details).

Day Two (Dunkirk):  Montgomery relied heavily on experienced divisions to assault the three beaches in the British Sector. Visits to:
  • Creton Farm:  The Norfolk Regiment was one of a number of units which fought until its ammunition ran out & it found itself surrounded. Men of the SS Totenkopf Division massacred the survivors near the village of Le Paradis.
  • Norfolk Cemetery: 97 of the 99 Norfolks who surrendered are buried here. Two men escaped to give evidence at the Nuremberg Trial of Fritz Knocklein.
  • Mount Cassel:  The dominating feature of French Flanders; the British 2nd Division rearguard here allowed five other Divisions to avoid encirclement & escape.
  • Bergues-Furnes Canal:  The 1st East Lancashire Regiment held 3000 yards along this part of the Dunkirk perimeter.
  • Dunkirk East Mole:  The Mole became one of the main evacuation points during Operation Dynamo.
  • Dunkirk Museum:  Artefacts from the evacuation housed in a coastal battery used as the Allied HQ during the evacuation.
  • Dunkirk Town Cemetery:  Memorial to the Missing commemorating over 4,500 casualties who died with no known grave. The cemetery contains the graves of 793 Dunkirk casualties as well as 460 graves from the First World War.
Free time in Ypres in the early evening before attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at 8.00 pm to remember the fallen. Return to accommodation.

Day Three (Return):
Depart for Calais & ferry crossing to Dover. Return to your local drop-off point(s). A hypermarket visit can be included en-route, time permitting (Sundays excluded).
