Steve Clarke, BA (Hons), PGCE

Steve is a former Head of Humanities & prior to retiring was an Assistant Head. He began leading tours for Galina in 2010.

Steve is a Regional Volunteer for The War Memorials Trust & is also a keen sportsman, captaining his local cricket club. He also enjoys watching the game & is a member of Yorkshire CCC. His other sporting interests include cycling & rugby.


Kath Murray, BSc (Hons), PGCE

Kath has taught Geography at secondary level for more than 16 years. She has been Head of Geography & has also taught History & Religious Studies. Kath has travelled extensively in the UK & Europe both on her own account & as a guide for Galina.

She has a particular interest in coastal geography & the human impact upon urban & rural  environments. 

Bruce Hubbard, BA (Hons), PGCE, DASE

Bruce is a retired secondary school teacher & Head of History & Humanities with over 30 years' experience. He has been a long-standing member of the Western Front Association & the Great War Forum & has worked for Galina since 2007.

Bruce’s other interests include sport, music & reading. He was actively engaged in local politics for many years as a local councillor & was also a former Mayor of Maghull in Liverpool. 


Julian Maslin, BSc (Hons), MSc, PGCE

Julian's first degree was in Geography & Geology from UCL & he also has an MSc in Geomorphology from Sheffield University. He has worked in education for more than 30 years, lecturing in Geography & Earth Sciences at Stafford College.

As well as leading groups for Galina, he is a volunteer guide at RAF Scampton's Heritage Centre & has created & developed several tours for the company.


Dr Barry Matthews, BA (Hons), MA, PGCE, PhD

Barry was Head of an English Faculty in Hull before establishing Galina in 1989.  After more than 25 years’ leading poetry and battlefield tours for both school & adult groups, he has a wealth of guiding experience & has created many of our literary & poetry tours.

Retired from the day-to-day running of the company, he has recently completed a PhD on Wilfred Owen. He enjoys travelling & watching sport, especially football.    

Ian Matthews, BA (Hons) Oxon., MA, PGCE

Ian was Head of History in a Liverpool comprehensive before joining the company in 1992. With more than 25 years in the business, he is one of the company's most experienced guides. As well as travelling widely across the UK & Europe., Ian has also developed a number of our tours.

His interests include not only military history but also social, political & economic history as well as art & architecture. Away from work, he enjoys travelling as well as watching football, cricket & rugby.  


Steve Lomas, BA (Hons), MEd, Cert Ed

Steve is a fomer Head of History with more than 30 years' teaching experience in Sheffield. His interest in the subject is quite diverse, ranging from the Middle Ages to military history & the Industrial Revolution. He has led tours for Galina since 2011.

Keen on sport, Steve has a football refereeing & FA coaching qualifications. In his spare time he also enjoys walking & cycling & is also involved in canal & steam railway preservation.     

Colonel (retd) Chris Best

Chris worked his way up through the ranks beginning his military career as a junior soldier in the RAMC in 1962 and retiring as a Colonel and Deputy Commander of the newly-created Medical Group prior to retirement in 2001. He has worked with Galina as a guide since 2002.
He has served with both 19 Field Ambulance and with 5 Field Ambulance RAMC in the Balkans.  He was also one of the representatives of the Army Medical Services during the Strategic Defence Review in 1997.

Dr David Nunn, BA (Hons), MA, MEd, PGCE, PhD

David has over 30 years' experience teaching History & English in secondary schools & lecturing to undergraduates at Derby & Nottingham universities. He has worked closely with Nottinghamshire County Council to research the impact of the Great War on the county.

David is a regular theatre-goer, has a keen interest in literature & the performing arts & also plays cricket for his local club.


Clive Bowery, BSc, MSc, PGCE

Clive is a former design & aeropsace engineer. He has also been a mathematics teacher & has worked for British Aerospace. As an Avionics Instructor his career took him to the Middle East where he worked in Saudi Arabia. 

Clive is a member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology & is currently Deputy Head of IT Services at Durham University . He led his first tour for Galina in 2009.

Robin Stewart, BEd, DSME, Cert Ed

Robin has over 35 years' experience as a teacher/lecturer, having taught English & Drama in both secondary schools & higher education. Robin has worked as a guide with Galina since 2008, leading tours to France, Belgium & the Netherlands.

A dedicated supporter of Sunderland FC, Robin's interests also include coaching football & rugby. He also enjoys live theatre & has been a theatre producer in his native north-east.

Len Trim, BA (Hons), PGCE

Len has both a military & academic background. Prior to qualifying as a teacher, he served in the Parachute Regiment & then worked as a senior technician on North Sea oil rigs. His miltary experience & his wide historical knowledge sparked his guiding groups around the battlefields of the Western Front.

As a paratrooper, he took part in the jump scenes during the filming of ‘A Bridge Too Far’. Not surprisingly, Len retains an interest in the role of airborne forces in the Second World war.
