Wilfred Owen at War: The Sambre-Oise Canal

Wilfred Owen at War Tour:  Suggested Four-Day Itinerary

Day One (Outward):  Local pick-up & travel to Dover. Ferry to Calais. Onward travel to your accommodation in/near Arras (B&B for two nights). Check-in & evening free.  Evening meals can be added to your tour if required.
(Note:  This itinerary can be adapted for groups wishing to travel via P&O North Sea Ferries sailing overnight from Hull. Please ask our staff for details).

Day Two (The Somme):  Owen's military experiences; the places & events which inspired his war poetry. Visits to: 
  • Serre & Munich Trench:  Owen's first experience of the war on the Somme in 1917
  • Newfoundland Park:  Preserved battlefield; the reality & experience of trench warfare
  • Thiepval Memorial to the Missing:  The Somme as a watershed in attitudes to the war
  • Blighty Valley & Crucifix Corner:  The Medical services & casualties
  • Dartmoor War Cemetery:  Henry Webber's grave; Dulce et Decorum Est...   
  • Mametz & Mansel Copse: The grave of Noel Hodgson MC; changing perceptions of war   
Return to accommodation & evening free.      

Day Three (Hindenburg Line):  The road to Craiglockhart & return to active service. Visits to:
  • Cerisy-Gailly Cemetery:  No 13 Casualty Clearing Station where Owen was sent in 1917   
  • Manchester Hill:  The 2nd Manchester battalion & the battle of Savy Wood in April 1917
  • Maissemy German Cemetery:  The failure of the Ludendorff Offensive in 1918
  • Riqueval Bridge:  Breaking the Hindenburg Line, 29th September 1918
  • Joncourt & Swiss Cottage:  Capture of the Beaurevoir-Fonsomme Line & Owen's MC

Overnight in St Quentin (3* B&B accommodation). An evening meal can be added if required.

Day Four: (Sambre-Oise Canal):  The final major battle of the war & Owen's death. Visits to:
  • The Forester's Hut:  The place where Owen spent his last night
  • Sambre-Oise Canal:  Owen's death in the attack on the canal on November 4th 1918
  • Ors Cemetery:  Wilfred Owen's grave
Depart for Calais & ferry crossing to Dover. Return to your local drop-off point.
